Off the Beaten Path: Why Some Dreams Take Longer—But Are Worth Fighting For

Three years ago, Control Alt Delete recognized something that many organizations simply weren’t addressing—Survivors escaping domestic violence in rural  Arizona face unique challenges that require unique solutions.

That realization became Off the Beaten Path, our rural initiative designed to create a remote Control Alt Delete office that will serve Southern Arizona while laying the groundwork for a future safe space for Survivors escaping domestic violence.

It hasn’t been easy.

In fact, there have been more obstacles than we ever imagined.

But unlike many organizations, we refuse to quietly let a project disappear.

Transparency Matters

Over the years, we have watched countless nonprofit organizations announce ambitious building projects intended to help domestic violence Survivors, individuals experiencing homelessness, or youth aging out of foster care.

The excitement is contagious. Donors generously contribute because they believe in the vision.

Then…

Months turn into years.

Updates become infrequent.

Communication stops.

The project quietly fades into the background.

As someone who has personally donated to several nonprofit building campaigns, our founder knows exactly how frustrating that can be. Donations were made with the hope of helping bring those projects to life, yet years later there were no updates, no explanation of where the funds had gone, and certainly no offer to refund donors if the project could not be completed.

That isn’t how Control Alt Delete operates.

Our supporters deserve honesty.

If something changes, we’ll tell you.

If we hit obstacles, we’ll tell you.

If plans need to evolve, we’ll tell you.

Because trust is earned through transparency.

Putting Donors First

As challenges delayed Off the Beaten Path, we reached out to many of the donors who specifically supported this initiative.

We gave them a choice.

Would they like their donations redirected to where they were needed most—helping Survivors escape immediately—or would they prefer the funds remain dedicated to Off the Beaten Path?

Nearly every donor responded with the same message:

“Use it wherever it’s needed most.”

That generosity allowed us to continue facilitating life-saving escapes while still preserving funds dedicated to making Off the Beaten Path a reality.

Today, we still have some funds set aside specifically for this project. Those existing funds will be used to create Off the Beaten Path as a safe, peaceful place where Survivors can catch their breath, begin to feel secure, and take the first steps toward rebuilding their lives. Every dollar that remains dedicated to this initiative continues to move us closer to making that vision a reality.

The vision has never disappeared.

The Road Hasn’t Been Easy

Our original plan looked straightforward on paper.

Reality had other ideas.

One of the biggest challenges?

Finding builders willing to work in a remote area.

The location is intentionally secluded.

That wasn’t an accident.

Safety has always been the priority.

The land itself was not purchased by Control Alt Delete. Instead, our founder is generously allowing the organization to use a portion of her private property for the future Control Alt Delete office and, ultimately, a safe place where Survivors can begin rebuilding their lives.

Sometimes the safest places truly are Off the Beaten Path.

Why Rural Arizona Needs Something Different

People often assume escaping domestic violence is difficult because of finances, transportation, or housing.

Those are certainly barriers.

But rural communities introduce another obstacle that many people never consider.

Everyone knows everyone.

One escape story has stayed with us because it perfectly illustrates this reality.

An advocate was helping a mother and her children flee an abusive situation in a small Southern Arizona community. A hotel room had been secured nearby so the family could safely leave.

Everything appeared to be in place.

Then someone working at the hotel recognized the family.

The employee happened to know the abuser and called him, asking why his wife and children were checking into the hotel.

Within a short time, the abuser arrived.

He forced the family to leave with him and assaulted the mother in front of her children.

The escape failed—not because the Survivor wasn’t brave enough, but because in small communities anonymity can be nearly impossible.

That is the heartbreaking reality many rural Survivors face.

Why Off the Beaten Path Matters

Off the Beaten Path is about more than building an office.

It’s about creating options.

It’s about providing a secure location where Survivors can arrive without worrying that someone knows their family, recognizes their vehicle, or calls their abuser.

It’s about creating a peaceful environment where fear can begin to give way to hope.

It’s about giving advocates another safe destination when traditional options simply aren’t safe enough.

It’s about ensuring that geography doesn’t determine whether someone can escape abuse.

Every day, Control Alt Delete helps facilitate approximately 50 escapes from domestic violence. While most assistance is provided electronically within minutes through our statewide network of trusted referral partners, there are situations where a secure physical location could make the difference between a successful escape and a dangerous outcome.

That is exactly why Off the Beaten Path continues to matter.

We’re Still Building

The timeline has changed.

The path has changed.

Some of the plans have changed.

But the mission has not.

Off the Beaten Path is still moving forward.

Maybe not as quickly as we originally hoped.

But it is moving.

And we’ll continue sharing that journey with the people who believed in it from the beginning.

Because our supporters deserve to know where we stand.

They deserve honesty.

They deserve updates.

Most importantly, they deserve to know that every decision we make is centered on one goal:

Helping Survivors safely escape domestic violence—no matter how far off the beaten path that journey may take them.

Control Alt Delete removes the barriers that keep people in unsafe and abusive situations by providing one time assistance at the most vulnerable and crucial times as Survivors are actually escaping. We can’t do it without you, our supporters.
