Every Escape Looks Different

No two stories of escaping domestic violence are the same. Each Survivor’s journey is as unique as the circumstances they face. At Control Alt Delete, we understand that these escapes are deeply personal, shaped by the unpredictable behaviors of abusers and the Survivor’s courage to reclaim their life.

When I escaped, it wasn’t a dramatic departure under the cover of darkness or a sudden moment of clarity. It was a complex, emotional process riddled with manipulation. My abuser asked for a divorce, calmly and deliberately. I thought I was finally free, that I could breathe again, even for a moment. The relief was something only another Survivor can understand. But the very next day, the same person stood before me and said, “I made a mistake. I was only trying to scare you.” My reply was simple “Yes you did make a mistake.” and I never looked back or regretted my choice to not reconcile.

That’s the nature of abuse—it’s not always physical. It’s control, fear, and emotional manipulation. It’s the constant push and pull, designed to keep you in a state of confusion, doubting your own reality.

Escaping from this cycle is never simple. Some Survivors leave with only the clothes on their back, driven by a single moment of opportunity. Others spend weeks, months, or even years carefully planning their escape. For some, it’s a last-minute call for help; for others, it’s building the strength to leave after being told countless times, “You’ll never make it without me.”

At Control Alt Delete, we honor every Survivor’s story, no matter how different it looks. We know that for some, escape might involve an elaborate plan, while for others, it’s a split-second decision to break free. Some leave quietly; others have to flee in the face of escalating danger.

What matters most is that they are no longer trapped in fear. Every Survivor deserves safety, dignity, and the chance to rebuild.

If you’re a Survivor—or know someone who is—please know that there’s no “right way” to escape. There’s only your way. When you’re ready, get a referral and Control Alt Delete will help. The referral process is crucial to escaping safely with the proper necessary documentation.
